‘They did not leave us to die at sea’: Rohingya refugee recalls desperate boat journey to Malaysia
Malaysia is home to roughly 126,000 registered Rohingya refugees who have fled violent persecution in Myanmar.
To the Malaysian authorities, it’s an illegal intrusion, but for Rohingya refugees like Nurul Nisa, the boat journey she took to reach Langkawi was born of desperation. Speaking to This Week in Asia, she recalls surviving the gruelling nine-day crossing in 2012 by drinking seawater. Today, Nurul runs a small shop in Langkawi, but still misses home in Myanmar.
