Hongkongers flock to ‘cheaper’ Shenzhen over Labour Day weekend break
The Immigration Department estimates that around 6 million passengers will pass through Hong Kong’s sea, land and air control points from May 1 to 5.

Hongkongers flocked to Shenzhen for a short getaway as the Labour Day holiday began on May 1, 2026. Some of the travellers said nearby Shenzhen was a relatively cheaper option than other mainland Chinese cities. Labour Day is a statutory public holiday in Hong Kong and also marks the start of the mainland’s five-day “golden week” break from May 1 to 5. The number of entries and exits to and from Hong Kong during the period is expected to reach 6 million.
