Located in Mexicali, a city on the US-Mexico border, La Chinesca neighbourhood was once home to Chinese immigrants a century ago. The Chinese community built a network of basement tunnels after arriving in 1900 for immigrants who cannot stand Mexico’s heatwaves in the summer. The basement also served as a centrepoint for smuggling and access for Americans to visit bars, nightclubs, and brothels in Mexicali during the Prohibition period.
