Former US president Jimmy Carter, who established formal diplomatic relations with Beijing and welcomed China’s paramount leader Deng Xiaoping to the White House, died on December 29, 2024. He was 100 years old and had been in hospice care since February 2023. Though he struggled with a US hostage crisis in Iran and a bad economy that ultimately relegated him to a single term, the American leader is also remembered for his efforts to normalise US-China relations during his presidency as well as humanitarian and peace efforts after he left office.
