Why the vital Red Sea shipping lane may be the new frontline in the US-Iran war
With the Strait of Hormuz already disrupted, the Red Sea is now a critical alternative outlet for Gulf oil and other products.
The United States has launched fresh air strikes against Iran, which has retaliated by firing missiles towards Jordan. Iran has also warned it will expand its campaign to throttle global energy markets from targeting vessels trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz to those in the vital Red Sea route. Doing so would involve enlisting the help of Tehran’s Houthi allies in Yemen. The move would deepen the Iran conflict as well as the global energy crisis.
