All performers had a niche during the 1990s, and Hongkongers thought of Karen Mok Man-wai as the friendly girl next door who was game for anything.

Mok’s down-to-earth nature belied her ambition, which led to success as both an actress and a singer.

Her key film roles include as the frantic Blondie in Wong Kar-wai’s Fallen Angels, and the girlfriend of a Category III (adult) film director in Derek Yee Tung-sing’s Viva Erotica – in which she had a passionate love scene with Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing.
Mok was also adept at comedy, appearing in Stephen Chow Sing-chi’s The God of Cookery and Shaolin Soccer.
