Taiwanese director Chen Yu-hsun’s period drama A Foggy Tale, set against Taiwan’s White Terror era, has emerged as the front runner at the 62nd Golden Horse Awards with 11 nominations, including best picture, best director and acting nods for its leads.
Close behind is Left-Handed Girl, a coming-of-age drama from first-time director Tsou Shih-ching, who is known for producing several films by Oscar-winning director Sean Baker (The Florida Project). Left-Handed Girl’s nine nods include two for Baker for best original screenplay and best editing.
Alongside A Foggy Tale and Left-Handed Girl, the race for best narrative feature is rounded out by Chong Keat Aun’s Mother Bhumi, a Malaysian drama starring China’s Fan Bingbing; dark comedy The Waves Will Carry Us, by Malaysia-born, Taiwan-based filmmaker Lau Kek-huat; and Hong Kong film Queerpanorama.

The latter – a black-and-white, sexually charged gay drama that marks the return of filmmaker Jun Li Jun-shuo after his award-winning run with 2021’s Drifting – is the most high-profile title among the Hong Kong contenders, with five nods that also include best director and original screenplay.
Another Hong Kong film receiving five nominations is the assassin thriller Road to Vendetta, albeit all in technical categories – for visual effects, art direction, make-up and costume design, action choreography, and sound effects.

Other notable Hong Kong nominees include Will Or Wai-lam (A Foggy Tale), who is fighting stage four lung cancer, for best leading actor; Anthony Wong Chau-sang (Finch & Midland) for best supporting actor; and the only two entries in the best animated feature category, Another World and A Mighty Adventure.
