Hong Kong public holidays 2026: how to get a 9-day Lunar New Year break
Government gazettes dates for public holidays next year, with residents able to enjoy longer breaks with some clear use of their annual leave

Hong Kong residents can enjoy nine days off at Lunar New Year and more extended weekends by taking a few days off to make the most of the public holidays in 2026.
The government on Friday gazetted the dates for next year’s public holidays, with residents able to enjoy six long weekends without strategically taking days off. There will be 17 days of public holidays in 2026.
For the 2026 Lunar New Year holiday running from February 17 to 19, residents working five days a week can enjoy as many as nine days off by taking leave on February 16 and 20.
Hongkongers can also look forward to a long Easter weekend, which starts on April 3 and runs until April 7, which has been allocated as a public holiday due to the Ching Ming Festival taking place on the same day as Easter Sunday.
“As the Ching Ming Festival in 2026 falls on a Sunday, the following day will be designated as a general holiday in substitution,” a government spokesman said.
“As the day following the Ching Ming Festival falls on Easter Monday, the next day that is not itself a general holiday will be observed as an additional general holiday.”
