More commonly sighted over the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia or the expanses of New Mexico than weaving through Hong Kong’s dense skyline, these colourful, curiously shaped aircraft will be floating en masse beside Victoria Harbour this week, as the city welcomes the first AIA International Hot Air Balloon Fest from September 4 to 7.

The festival promises some spectacular scenes, with dozens of vibrantly coloured balloons adding no small amount of whimsy to Hong Kong’s otherwise strait-laced cityscape.

Visitors will have the chance to hop on a hot-air balloon and experience the gentle lift and panoramic views from some 60 feet above ground, within a tethered setting overseen by trained and certified balloon pilots. Be sure to book online to secure a slot for what is sure to be a sold-out experience.

The festival will also give city dwellers insight into the art of inflating a balloon at regular demonstrations. Typically taking between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on size, balloon inflation usually occurs in the early morning or late afternoon, as these times offer the most stable atmospheric conditions and calmest winds. While the basic concept of heating air for lift is straightforward, the process involves a combination of practical skills and an appreciation for the forces of nature that at first might not seem obvious.

Stick around until sunset for the Night Glow Show, an airborne parade of balloons glowing against the iconic Hong Kong skyline, synchronised to music. Beyond the aerial awe, expect live music from local and international artists, with household names such as Joey Yung, Serrini, RubberBand, Tyson Yoshi and Leo Ku set to grace the main harbourfront stage over the festival’s four days.
