Recap by phillip woo

Backed late to jump favourite, Speedy Smartie was wide with cover in midfield and just got up in the concluding stages to win a blanket finish. Sensationally-backed Oriental Surprise came up short by a neck a prominent run one off the fence. He's a winner waiting to happen. Happy Horse found a couple just too good after going for home on top 200m out following a speed-tracking run. He's caught the eye in both outings this term and a win is around the corner. Early favourite Always My Folks just missed a placing after getting all favours in the box seat from gate one. It was a pleasing run following a downgrade. Glorious Expert made good ground late down the outside for fifth without threatening the top four after travelling three wide towards the rear from gate 12. It was his best effort from four starts this term. Modest Gentlemen ran on steadily to finish next best after making his run four back on the fence. He's still to put his best foot forward in three outings this term. Ever Smart made inroads late through the middle travelling last after getting hampered at the jump.

Racing Incident Report

Race Two : (152) - NIIGATA HANDICAP - Class 5 - 1000Meters

Horse No 1 SPEEDY SMARTIE (H108) C L Chau Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 2 ALWAYS MY FOLKS (J345) K Teetan Approaching the winning post shifted out slightly and made contact with HAPPY HORSE.

Horse No 3 DIVINE MOONLIGHT (K119) E C W Wong Shifted in at the start despite the efforts of its rider, made contact with EVER SMART and became unbalanced.

Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.

Apprentice E C W Wong stated that in the early stages his mount hung in and proved difficult to ride.

Horse No 4 HAPPY HORSE (H061) P N Wong Shifted out at the start, made contact with SANTORINI and became unbalanced.

Prior to declaring weighed-in the Stewards viewed the patrol films to ascertain if there were grounds for a protest/objection against ORIENTAL SURPRISE and SPEEDY SMARTIE.

When the Stewards found that over the concluding stages ORIENTAL SURPRISE shifted in and away from SPEEDY SMARTIE and ALWAYS MY FOLKS shifted out slightly which resulted in HAPPY HORSE being tightened for room between those two runners they could not be satisfied that there were sufficient grounds to lodge a protest/objection and on that basis weighed-in was declared on the numbers semaphored by the Judge.

C L Chau, rider of SPEEDY SMARTIE, was advised in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mounts when they shift ground whilst not clear.

Horse No 5 SANTORINI (J076) M L Yeung On jumping was crowded between ORIENTAL SURPRISE and HAPPY HORSE, both of which shifted ground.

Approaching the 800 Metres shifted in abruptly when being shifted behind HAPPY HORSE.

Making the turn near the 600 Metres lay in and made contact with the running rail.

Horse No 6 DRAGON SUNRISE (J269) K De Melo Jumped only fairly and then was crowded by MODEST GENTLEMAN which shifted in slightly.

Near the 600 Metres became unbalanced when crowded by EVER SMART which shifted in when racing keenly.

Horse No 7 ORIENTAL SURPRISE (K028) L Hewitson Shifted in at the start, made contact with SANTORINI and became unbalanced.

Over the concluding stages shifted in and away from SPEEDY SMARTIE after being taken in by that runner, resulting in ORIENTAL SURPRISE making contact with HAPPY HORSE and racing tight between HAPPY HORSE and SPEEDY SMARTIE.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 8 CAMP FIRE (J259) L Ferraris L Ferraris advised that from a wide barrier his instructions were to go forward.

Trainer D J Whyte confirmed the instructions issued.

Horse No 10 HAPPY TANGO (D075) Y L Chung Near the 200 Metres was taken in when bumped by EVER SMART which shifted in before being corrected by its rider.

As a consequence HAPPY TANGO was then shifted to the inside of SANTORINI and behind CAMP FIRE and could not be ridden out over the final 100 Metres.

Horse No 12 EVER SMART (J179) H Doyle In the early stages raced keenly and near the 600 Metres when being crossed by HAPPY TANGO (Y L Chung) got its head up, shifted in and crowded DRAGON SUNRISE.

Y L Chung was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground.

Near the 200 Metres shifted in and was bumped.

H Doyle stated that the instructions were to go forward.

She said after her mount jumped only fairly and then was crowded by DIVINE MOONLIGHT it settled further back in the field than intended.
