He’s feeling fitter and more confident than ever and for Alexis Badel, the results are showing.
Fresh from his first success of the season at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, the French jockey made it a week to remember after dominating Sunday’s Sha Tin meeting with a treble.
“I’ve been given good rides and everything went smooth. I feel fit and confident,” said Badel, who has hit the ground running after a successful riding stint in Japan during the off-season.
Badel booted home Frankie Lor Fu-chuen’s My Flying Angel in Sunday’s opener, the Class Five Hong Tung Handicap (1,400m), before bagging the biggest upset win of the season so far.

Sent out at the huge odds of $66.75, Same To You overcame a wide draw in gate 14 under a patient Badel ride to shock punters in the Class Four Tung Wah Group Of Hospitals Challenge Cup (1,400m).
“It was obviously a good surprise for everyone,” Badel said after the Mark Newnham-trained gelding stormed home from last to comfortably score by a length and three-quarters.
“It was a late pickup with the lightweight [122lb]. The gate forced us to take him back and with the strong pace ahead, he just dusted them. It was huge. He’s probably a bit better than we thought.”
Newnham was full of praise for Badel after he snagged Same To You back to last before launching the seven-year-old’s run down the outside in the straight.

“Generally, I would have thought in Class Four he would need a really good barrier and a good ride. So from the barrier, a nice patient ride and fast pace, it worked out well for him,” Newnham said.
“The season’s only young but it was a little bit of a surprise, but a nice surprise.”
Badel sealed his red-letter day with victory in the last race, the Class Three Wah Fu Handicap (1,400m), aboard Chris So Wai-yin’s Master Of All.
“It was one of those days when everything went smooth, the horses were in good form,” Badel said.

“It’s been a good start so far so yeah, I’m pleased. I’m just trying to get it smooth and avoid the trouble with the stewards and find my rhythm.”
Same To You’s victory sealed a running double for Newnham after Max Que finally broke through after an encouraging but somewhat frustrating debut campaign which featured four seconds.
The Akeed Mofeed gelding took advantage of barrier one in the first section of the Class Four Kwong Fuk Handicap (1,400m), enjoying a cosy run in the box seat before Andrea Atzeni hooked him off the inside in the straight.
“Last season he was a little frustrating – plenty of second placings, but he’s come back a little bit stronger and he got gate one and a really good ride from Andrea,” Newnham said after Max Que beat Aeroinvincible by a length and a half.
“Good to see him get the job done. If he can get another win or two [this season], I’ll be pretty happy. He’s an improving horse. Last season he was a tall horse but lacked a bit of strength, but he’s definitely strengthened up now and I think that win will give him a bit more confidence.”
Atzeni joined Newnham with a brace after also booting home the Jamie Richards-trained Jubilant Winner in the first section of the Class Four Lok Wah Handicap (1,200m).
