Fresh from a stunning four-timer at Happy Valley, Caspar Fownes is confident Dancing Code can help continue his early momentum when the consistent sprinter tackles Sunday’s Class Two Yi Tung Shan Handicap (1,200m) at Sha Tin.

Fownes is dreaming of adding to his four championship wins after soaring to the top of the leaderboard on six wins thanks to his quartet of winners on Wednesday night.

Armed with six runners this weekend, the 58-year-old has high expectations for Dancing Code’s return from a campaign that featured two wins and four placings.

“He remains in good form. He had a lovely trial in Conghua last week down the straight and he’s got a pretty good record at the 1,200m at Sha Tin, so we’re looking forward to the race,” Fownes said of the four-time course and distance winner.

“He’s got a nice, soft draw [in gate four] – I’m sure he’ll be competitive.”

Dancing Code bids for back-to-back victories after ending last season with a stylish Class Two success under Ellis Wong Chi-wang, who again takes the ride on Sunday.

“Ellis has got a good record on him, won a few races and they get on well together,” Fownes said of his stable apprentice, who booted home the trainer’s first two winners on Wednesday night.

“These sort of races, they’re always competitive in Hong Kong but he’s a good, honest horse, so I’m sure he’ll do well on Sunday.”

Young Champion, Gorgeous Win, Baby Crystal, Call Me Glorious, Tomodachi Kokoroe, Brave Star, Harmony N Blessed, Sing Dragon, Mid Winter Wind and Brilliant Express are Dancing Code’s rivals in the strongest race on Sunday’s card.

While it’s still early days this season, Fownes is eager to continue his hot form when he also starts Young Fighter, Elegant Life, Charming Steed, Sky Trust and The Heir on Sunday.

“We’ve got some nice, new horses in the system that you’re always hopeful that they’re going to come out and win a few races for you and if that’s the case, then you set yourself up for a chance to be a title contender,” Fownes said.

“It’s very, very open this year. You’ve probably got 15 or 16 stables with the maximum strength, so everyone’s up to have a winning chance at the title.

“I know how to get it done, I know how to fight if I’m in the run in the last part, I’ll be there. But at this stage, we don’t even worry about that. We just worry about keeping the horses healthy and worry about getting as many winners as we can.”
