Angus Chung Yik-lai and Tycoon Resources will look to maintain their unbeaten record together when starting at Sha Tin for the first time in Wednesday’s Class Three Better Future Handicap (1,200m).

The Tony Cruz-trained galloper proved last start that a step up to 1,200m was no issue when securing a dominant win over Refusetobeenglish by one and a half lengths, making it three from three.

While Chung is confident in Tycoon Resources’ ability over the trip, the change of track will prove a test for the lightly raced three-year-old.

“The change of track, I think it would be a challenge for him. He’s never raced at Sha Tin and it’s a longer straight, and the ground will be a little bit harder for him. Hopefully he’s not too keen in the race and behind the barriers,” Chung said.

Angus Chung celebrates after winning aboard Tycoon Resources at Happy Valley.

“He’s a horse who is very easily upset, easy to get nervous. Hopefully from Happy Valley to Sha Tin he can calm down.”

Wednesday will see the pair line-up against a much stronger field including the promising Hong Kong debut winner Effortless Win, Invincible Steed who placed over 1,000m on his local debut, Szeryng who resumed with a first-up placing, three-time winner Motor and the talented Super Strong Kid.

Barrier three provides Chung with plenty of options for Tycoon Resources, who has been working well between races.

“The two horses inside [Effortless Win and Matters Most] have got speed, we will probably sit outside the leader, we don’t need to go to the rail,” Chung said.

“He’s feeling very good in work – not much different, not much has changed.”

Chung will be aboard Cruz-trained gallopers for five of his seven rides on Wednesday, including Beauty Bolt who returns to 1,400m in the Class Two Hong Kong Reunification Cup.

Chung will take the reins for the first time on the Night Of Thunder gelding, who he has ridden in both trackwork and trials, and believes 1,400m is his ideal trip.

“He’s a good horse. I think his best distance is 1,400m, I expect him to do well,” Chung said.

“He’s been good in track work, he always has a good attitude as well; quite easy to control and doesn’t do anything wrong.”

While barrier nine will be a challenge, the four-year-old will only need to carry 115lb after Chung’s 2lb claim.

“I will ride him where he is comfortable, normally he’s got early speed so we will probably put him in the first half of the field,” Chung said.

Bullish Nova has exceeded expectations in two career starts, and will look to break through in the Class Four Serving The Community Handicap (1,200m) when he races at Sha Tin for the first time.

“He’s performed better than we expected. He’s not easy to ride; he’s very green and he’s got character,” Chung said.

Beauty Bolt, ridden by Zac Purton, wins at Sha Tin.

“The last two starts, he’s proved himself and that he can finish well, he’s just a little bit green. He needs to calm down a little bit, but I think the long straight will benefit him. It looks like Happy Valley is a bit too short – he always finishes well, but he can’t make up that much ground, so I think Sha Tin will be better.”

Chung gives plenty of credit to Bullish Nova’s work rider, who has put a power of time and effort into the headstrong three-year-old.

“She’s riding very well on that horse. I have been keeping an eye on her and that horse and they work well together – they get along very well,” Chung said.

Chung’s book is rounded out by the Cruz runners Outgate and Happydearhappydeer, as well as Pierre Ng Pang-chi’s gallopers Synergy In Action and Cheerful Wongchoy.
